SFI Certified Greeting Cards Project and Partnership Details
SFI is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with One Tree per Card to create this line of greeting cards designed with sustainability in mind. From reforestation efforts around the world, to responsible forest management and a committed supply chain in North America, these cards are the perfect way to send a message.
As the name suggests, one tree will be planted for each and every card purchased or distributed. The trees are being planted by Trees for the Future, a long-standing US-based NGO that plants millions of trees in developing regions throughout the world. These reforestation initiatives have important environmental and social benefits such as:
- Promoting long-term sustainable land use by communities involved in the planting and restoration projects
- Minimizing land erosion and protecting surface water quality
- Restoring land productivity
- Providing habitat for insects, birds and other animals
- Cooling the air by a process known as "evotranspiration", i.e. the trees draw water from the soil, which evaporates into the atmosphere, creating low clouds that reflect the sun's rays
- Removing and storing CO2 while the trees are growing, and thus helping mitigate the impacts of global warming.
- Providing wood to nearby villages for basic needs such as heating, cooking and construction
These cards are printed on certified SFI paper containing 10% post-consumer waste. The wood fiber comes from North American forests certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program.
- The paper was purchased under a verified SFI chain-of-custody system indicating that the origin of all wood fiber is known and from legal sources.
- The paper used was Centura Silk manufactured by the NewPage Corporation mill in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. This facility is triple-certified for chain-of-custody (FSC, PEFC and SFI), and also has an environmental management system certified to the ISO 14001 standard.
- The cards were printed by Goetz Printing (Springfield, VA) using a sheet-fed offset process and non-petroleum-based vegetable-based inks. Goetz is a US EPA Green Power Partner and uses 100% renewable electricity generated from wind and solar technologies. Renewable Energy Certificates were certified by Green-e.
- The paper used for the envelopes is 100% post-consumer waste and manufactured by Neenah Paper.
- The cards and envelopes are fully recyclable and we strongly encourage people to recycle them so that they will be re-used in the future to make paper and board products.
