SFI Audit Firms
Only certification bodies (audit firms) that have successfully completed an accreditation program through an internationally recognized accreditation body can perform SFI certification audits.
ANAB Accreditation for Certification Bodies Conducting Certifications to SFI 2005-2009
In 2005 the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) developed a new SFI-specific accreditation program for certification bodies conducting certification audits to the SFI 2005-2009 Standard. ANAB developed and now administers the accreditation program for SFI 2005-2009 based on ISO Guide 66. Once a certification body has successfully undergone the accreditation application process which includes an on-site and witness assessment process, the certification body will be granted accreditation by ANAB's independent Accreditation Council. Further, the audit firm will be provided with the ANAB accreditation mark which would then be affixed to all certificates for companies which achieve certification to the SFI 2005-2009 Standard. Visit www.anab.org for further information or contact Lori Scheid at 800.606.5394 x 7827.
ANSI Accreditation for Certification Bodies Conducting Certifications to PEFC CoC Standard (PEFC Annex 4) and to SFI CoC Standard (SFI Annex 2)
With a PEFC CoC certification, an interested company is able to track and mix wood fiber from any forest that has been certified to any of the 21 certification programs endorsed by the PEFC (such as SFI 2005-2009, CSA-Z809, Finnish, Australian, Sweden PEFC endorsed certification programs). A PEFC CoC certification can in turn lead to PEFC claims and a PEFC certified content label, if all PEFC Label Use Requirements are met, as per PEFC Annex 5, PEFC Logo Use Rules. Visit www.pefc.org for copies of PEFC Annex 4 and PEFC Annex 5.
The SFI Program also offers a SFI CoC Standard, SFI Annex 2, which sets out CoC requirements that are highly consistent with PEFC Annex 4 requirements, yet still have differences in definitions and approaches to issues including recycled/recovered content and tracking. The SFI Program Requirements for Fiber Sourcing, Chain-of-Custody and Product Labels allows a SFI Program Participant with a SFI CoC certification to track and mix wood fiber from any forest that has been certified to a certification program in N. America that has been endorsed by the PEFC (currently SFI 2005-2009 and CAN/CSA Z809) and gain access to SFI certified content claims and SFI Percent Content Labels.
In 2005 the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) develop a new CoC accreditation program for certification bodies that would qualify them to deliver CoC certifications to either SFI Annex 2 and/or PEFC Annex 4 and/or an integrated certification audit to SFI Annex 2 and PEFC Annex 4 simultaneously. It remains that only an SFI CoC certification can result in SFI based claims and SFI labels, and a PEFC CoC certification provides access to PEFC based claims and PEFC labels. Once a certification body has successfully undergone the accreditation application process which includes an on-site and witness assessment process, the certification body will be granted accreditation by ANSI's Accreditation Committee (ACC). With this ACC accreditation, the certification body receives the right to use the ANSI accreditation symbol on any accredited certificates it issues to companies which have successfully undergone a SFI CoC and/or PEFC CoC certification audit. Visit www.ansi.org for further information or contact Reinaldo Figueiredo at 202.331.3611.
SCC Accreditation for Certification Bodies Conducting Certifications to SFI 2005-2009 and PEFC CoC Standard (PEFC Annex 4)
The SFI Standard is also implemented in Canada and certification bodies will also have the option to obtain the appropriate accreditation in Canada. In Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) delivers accreditations for audit firms wishing to perform 2005-2009 SFI certification audits and also SFI and PEFC CoC audits. Visit www.scc.ca for further information.
Only the certification bodies listed below are approved to perform certification audits to the SFI Standard and/or the SFI and PEFC CoC standards because they have completed an accreditation program.
