Requirements for Responsible Fiber Sourcing, Chain of Custody and On and Off Product Labels
SFI on-product labels and off-product marks labels are recognized globally, telling customers that they are buying forest products from a responsible source.
To maintain this high standard, organizations that want to use SFI program labels must meet the requirements set out in the following standards and documents:
- SFI Responsible Fiber Sourcing Standard and Associated Labels (Annex 1) describes requirements certified program participants and secondary producers must meet to use the SFI Certified Fiber Sourcing on-product label.
- SFI Chain-of-Custody Standard and Associated Labels (Annex 2) describes requirements organizations must meet to use SFI claims or labels that refer to certified forest content or responsible fiber sources.
- Rules for Use of SFI On-Product Labels and SFI Off-Product Marks (Annex 3) describes rules regarding the use of all SFI-registered labels and marks on products or in public communications.
- SFI Definitions (Annex 4) – provides definitions for terms noted in italics throughout Annexes 1, 2 and 3.
The SFI program meets guidelines on environmental claims in product advertising and communication issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and guidelines on environmental labeling and advertising issued by the Competition Bureau of Canada.
