Registration Opens for SFI Conference

Join us at the 2012 SFI Annual Conference in Milwaukee, WI, from September 11 to 13 to find out how you can support healthy forests and strong communities today and into the future. The theme this year is The Future is Decided Now, and there will be speakers from conservation organizations, government agencies, community groups and SFI program participants to examine topics of interest to every link of the supply chain - from green building and responsible sourcing to conservation activities and bioenergy. Register or get the latest information on the conference website. If you are interested in sponsorship, download the 2012 Sponsorship Prospectus or contact Allison Welde.

LEED Consultation Continues

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) will open up another round of comments from May 1 to May 15 on the next draft of its LEED 2012 language - and SFI will continue to feature expert opinions on its Good for Forests blog setting out reasons why LEED should recognize all certification standards.

SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow says: "We aim to keep the discussion going through the fourth comment period, and beyond. This issue is just too important, and at SFI we care too much for our forests and communities. LEED is a precedent setting standard that can promote or undermine responsible forestry through its actions - let's make sure USGBC knows this and acts accordingly."

The views expressed on the SFI blog during the third comment period in March, which have been combined into an on-line document, were welcomed by many. On its website, One Voice for Working Forests says SFI "has done a great job of laying out the reasons why the building council should open up its standards." SFI used much of the content for an open letter to USGBC officials setting out the 10 top reasons why the LEED rating tool should accept all forest certification programs for its certified wood credit. The most recent draft language called for forest certification that is "FSC or better" to earn certified wood points

USGBC will hold a vote on LEED 2012 from June 1 to June 30. If you are a member of USGBC, make sure you have opted in by May 1 so you are eligible to vote.

The White House Rolls with SFI

For the fourth year in a row, SFI-certified paperboard was used for the official gift box for 2012 White House Easter Eggs. The National Park Foundation made forest conservation an integral part of the White House Easter Egg Roll, and recognized multiple certification standards by using SFI-certified boxes to package souvenir hardwood eggs that are certified to the Forest Stewardship Council.

Checking Out Certification Benefits

In a guest editorial posted in e-newsletter Green Lodging News, SFI's Jason Metnick advised hospitality industry representatives - including hotel owners, managers and employees - about the benefits of certified forest products from North America for new buildings and renovations; for furniture and flooring; for office paper and stationary; for cleaning products and restaurant supplies; and for printing services for promotional materials. He advised readers to embrace all certification standards, both to improve access and to help drive demand for certified products, certified lands and responsible sourcing.

Welcome, Monika Gurzenski!

SFI's new research associate Monika Gurzenski will conduct research and analysis in areas such as government, market outreach and public awareness. Monika, who has an MBA from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, most recently worked with Resolute Forest Products on environmental communications and sustainability.

SFI at Ecobuild UK

SFI Inc. joined PEFC UK and the Malaysian Timber Council with an exhibit at Ecobuild 2012 UK in London, England. More than 50,000 of the most influential individuals in design and construction visit Ecobuild, representing some of the most valuable and prestigious projects across the United Kingdom and internationally. "I had a chance to talk with European builders and architects who are very much aware of the SFI Standard, and know it is a great choice for green building projects," said Kathy Abusow, SFI President and CEO.
