SIC Spotlight: Virginia - Third Annual Sustainable Forestry Tour
|
The Virginia SFI Implementation Committee (SIC) in partnership with the Virginia Forestry Association and the Virginia Tree Farm Committee hosted the third annual Sustainable Forestry Tour this fall at Burke Woodlands in Caroline County, owned by a small, family forest landowner John Burke.
Architects, builders, engineers, realtors, and policy-makers witnessed active forest management first hand. At the first site, various stages of loblolly pine management were shown and discussed with topics including economics, genetics, and regeneration. Participants learned about longleaf pine restoration efforts as well as shortleaf and loblolly pine management. Understory burning and hardwood thinning were also on the agenda. In addition, participants viewed a site managed for hardwoods and visited a planted cypress stand.

Hal Salwasser in Memoriam
|
It is with great sadness that SFI staff share the news that Harold J. "Hal" Salwasser, former dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, passed away at his home on Oct. 15 of apparent natural causes. Salwasser had been an active member of the forestry faculty since stepping down as dean in 2012. He was a valued member of the SFI External Review Panel. Hal will be missed, and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Hal's family. Read the Oregon State announcement.
