Girl Guides Welcomes SFI into World Friendship Circle

As part of its community outreach efforts, SFI recognizes the critical role that young people play in building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. SFI has worked with Girl Guides of Canada for a number of years to help teach young Guides about forest certification and forest management as well as how to work on projects that support communities and conservation. These efforts have included the building of picnic tables for the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Most recently Duck Nest Boxes using lumber and plywood certified to the SFI Standard in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada

The Girl Guides of Canada have recently recognized SFI for its ongoing support and have welcomed them as part of the Girl Guides World Friendship Circle. Together, SFI and Girl Guides are helping to inspire girl greatness!

SFI Supports Restoration of Douglas Complex with Communities for Healthy Forests

Earlier this month, the Communities for Healthy Forests, Inc. with support from SFI Inc. held a ceremony celebrating the restoration of the Douglas Complex fire devastation area. The Douglas Complex wildfires gripped the State of Oregon in August of 2013, threatening homes, forcing evacuations and burning 144,688 acres in Oregon leaving a profound destruction in its wake.

Communities for Healthy Forests is working with SFI, local families and leaders to rebuild the destroyed ecosystem by replanting native trees and monitoring forest recovery over the span of three years.

As part of the restoration effort, 50 fifth graders from Fir Grove Elementary and SFI program participants, Plum Creek and Swanson Group, joined Communities for Healthy Forests, the Bureau of Land Management, Roseburg Forest Products, Douglas County, the Society of American Foresters and others for a tree planting ceremony.

Minnesota SFI Implementation Committee Chooses its Logger of the Year!
Scheff Logging and Trucking has been named the 2014 Logger of the Year by the Minnesota SFI Implementation Committee. The award was presented to the Marcell-based business at the Minnesota Logger Education Program (MLEP) workshop held in Tower April 15. Logger education is unique to the SFI program and ensures that managing forests for all of their values is integrated into all forest management plans.

The Logger of the Year Award recognizes outstanding independent logging contractor performance with the purpose of honoring Minnesota's competent professional independent logging contractors. The family-owned enterprise, established in 1977 supplies wood fiber to Minnesota's forest products economy, while at the same time harvesting trees in an environmentally sensitive manner.

SFI Serves Responsible Forestry Sunny-Side Up as part of Annual White House Easter Egg Tradition

The National Park Foundation has selected to package the official 2014 White House Easter Egg in a gift box made from paperboard certified to the SFI Standard.

SFI was delighted to be involved once again with this annual American tradition. By choosing to package these famous Easter eggs in boxes certified to the SFI standard, the National Park Foundation is setting an example to others about the importance of selecting products from responsibly managed forests and sends a clear message nationwide to invest in our forests and forest-based communities.
