Minnesota SIC Logger of the Year Jim Scheff Harvests the 2014 Capitol Christmas Tree

An 88-foot tall white spruce from Minnesota will be this year's U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. On the journey to the Capitol, more than 30 community celebrations are being planned. School kids, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and adults will have a chance to see the tree. The tour is an opportunity to tell our story about the integral role active forest management plays in maintaining healthy forests, providing wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities and jobs.

Jim Scheff is a member of the Minnesota Logger Education Program (MLEP) and a Minnesota Certified Master Logger. These two programs provide the training and certification needed to meet the requirements in the SFI Standard for Qualified Logging Professionals and Certified Logging Professionals. SFI's logger training requirements and support of programs like MLEP help to ensure loggers have the training needed for safe, productive and environmentally responsible timber harvesting.

Watch a video of the tree cutting ceremony and read a blog post about it.

Enter Your Project for the SFI Wood Design Award Category

SFI is excited to work once again with the Canadian Wood Council and Wood Works! to offer the second SFI Wood Design Award. It's part of the 2014 North American Wood Design Awards Program. The SFI Wood Design Award is a special award presented to a project (either residential or non-residential) that uses products certified to the SFI standard.

Vancouver's NSDA Architects won the first SFI Wood Design Award earlier this year. The architectural firm was recognized for its innovative use of wood certified to SFI in the new Kordyban Lodge, a Canadian Cancer Society care facility in British Columbia that provides a comfortable and peaceful home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers.

The Wood Design Awards invites entries to the 2014 program. It's the only combined program for U.S. and Canadian architects honoring design excellence in all types of buildings and interiors where wood plays a significant role.

Entries should consist of building projects that show a wide range of wood product applications, specifically using wood certified to SFI. Submit your entry today
